Step by Step: Vinyl

How to add vinyl to your new sign:

  • Vinyl (adhesive or heat transfer)

  • Vinyl cutter or scissors

  • Transfer tape

  • Squeegee or scraper tool

  • Heat press or iron (for heat transfer vinyl only)

Here's how to get started:

  1. Design your vinyl graphic using a design software or a pre-made template. If you are using a vinyl cutter, export the design as a .svg file. If you are using scissors, print the design onto paper and use it as a guide.

  2. Cut the vinyl using a vinyl cutter or scissors. If you are using a vinyl cutter, load the vinyl into the machine and send the design file to the cutter. If you are using scissors, carefully cut out the design following the lines on the paper template.

  3. Weed the vinyl by removing the excess vinyl from around the design. For intricate designs, use a weeding tool to gently lift the excess vinyl away from the design.

  4. Place transfer tape over the top of the vinyl design and smooth it down with a squeegee or scraper tool. The transfer tape will help you to lift and position the vinyl onto the wood sign.

  5. Peel the backing paper off the vinyl and position the vinyl onto the wood sign. Use the transfer tape to carefully lift and place the vinyl onto the sign.

  6. Smooth the vinyl onto the wood sign using a squeegee or scraper tool. Start from the center of the design and work your way outwards to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles.

  7. Carefully remove the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl design on the wood sign.

  8. If you are using heat transfer vinyl, you will need to use a heat press or iron to activate the adhesive and bond the vinyl to the wood sign. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for temperature and timing.

  9. Display your newly decorated wood sign or give it as a gift.
